Schumacher Historical Photo VideoIn 1910, Schumacher was just a train stop known as Aura Lake, but with the discovery of gold nearby, it attracted the attention of Frederick W. Schumacher, a pharmacist and mining investor from Columbus, Ohio. Upon arriving in Aura Lake, he built the Schumacher Mine, and purchased several other adjacent mining properties, and then subdivided the “surface rights” into lots for a planned town site. In exchange for a railway “right of-way” and train station, the Temiskaming & Northern Ontario Railway Commission changed the name from Aura Lake to Schumacher, Ontario on March 1st, 1912. With the discovery and development of the Schumacher Mine, along with the Hollinger and Coniaurum mines, and then the mighty McIntyre Mine, one of the largest and deepest gold mines in the world, the Town of Schumacher prospered. The Schumacher Historical Photo Video takes you on a journey of the community from 1912 until the early 1960's, when Schumacher grew from a hamlet of a few cabins in the woods to a dynamic community of 3,000 ethnically diverse people – including Italians, Poles, French, Germans, Ukranians, English, Scottish, Irish, Chinese, Finnish – with Croatians being the largest single ethnic group. spiritofschumacher.ca/historical-photo-video/
